Antoine Griezmann has the ambition of winning Ballon d’Or
France international Antoine Griezmann has said that it would be a honour to be named the next Ballon d’Or winner. The Atletico Madrid star had a stunning year for club and country after winning the Europa League title, European Super Cup and the World Cup and this has placed among the frontrunners for the coveted prize.
Speaking to ESPN, Griezmann admitted that the Ballon d’Or remains the biggest prize of all for any player and it would be nice for him to get his hands on the accolade come December, he said: “On a personal level, that's the highest you can get. It's the most historic award, the most prestigious one. However, I also am a player who thinks collectively over individually, but it would be nice [to win it] for myself, because of everything I've gone through, especially after having to separate myself from my family at 13 years old.”
Meanwhile, none of the French players were selected for the recent The Best FIFA Men’s award and when asked about that, Griezmann was pleasantly surprised saying: “It wasn't only about me. It was about other French players [being snubbed] as well. I haven't been able to understand it, but I haven't tried to, either. It was shocking to see that no world champions were considered.”
“Griezmann had been touted for a potential departure from Atletico during the end of the previous season but as the summer approached “, he showed the commitment towards the club by penning a new long-term contract. He has since been through an average run with just three goals “from 11 league appearances “but Atleti nevertheless remain in contention for the La Liga crown with only a four-point gap separating them from Barcelona.
Meanwhile, Atletico are second in their Champions League group after the first three games of the group stage. Their most recent meeting was against Borussia Dortmund, who thrashed them by a comfortable 4-0 scoreline at Signal Iduna Park.
