Bacary Sagna Targeted by West Ham on a Free Transfer

West Ham United have reportedly identified Manchester City defender Bacary Sagna as a potential signing in the coming transfer window.

Sagna is one of the player’s likely to leave City at the end of the season. The Frenchman came to English football with Arsenal in the 2007 season. He was signed for just € 9 million. After spending seven seasons at the Emirates stadium, he made the switch to City on a free transfer. Since then, he has been able to win the FA Cup and the League Cup. Sagna has featured in 77 games for City over the last three years.

However, the recent managerial change that brought in Pep Guardiola to the club might have brought his City career to a premature end. Even though Sagna has featured in several games this season, there are huge concerns about his age and ability to play at the very highest level for the next couple of years. At 34 years of age, Sagna will be able to provide the experience to the squad but not the agility.

As a result, the club are looking to do away with not only Sagna but also Pablo Zabaleta. West Ham have emerged as a potential destination for the Frenchman, who has 65 appearances for the national team since his debut in 2007.

West Ham will also be quite happy with signing a player of Sagna’s calibre. Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola recently admitted that the club has a major rebuilding job on its hands with a number of players above the age of 30. Jesus Navas, Vincent Kompany, Sagna, Pablo Zabaleta, Yaya Toure, Fernandinho, Gael Clichy, and David Silva are some of the players who are approaching the end of their careers. More importantly, these players have been crucial to the success of City in recent seasons. Hence, wholesale changes are expected in the summer.
