Manchester City manager drops injury update on Benjamin Mendy and Vincent Kompany
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has confirmed that both Benjamin Mendy and Vincent Kompany would continue to remain on the sidelines ahead of the weekend’s FA Cup meeting against Newport County on the road. The Citizens are going through a tough schedule where they have matches across four competitions and Guardiola has admitted that there will be minor changes in every game.
Speaking to reporters, Guardiola confirmed that Mendy and Kompany remain sidelines alongside long-term absentee Eliaquim Mangala. He added that he is aware of the forthcoming schedule where they have a match in every three days but he prepared to assess his option game by game with each fixture holding importance.
He said: "“We are going to make a very strong squad. We have few, few injuries, unfortunately Vincent“, Benjamin and [Eliaquim] Mangala. The other ones are fit, so the squad of course is going to play. A few new players [will play] that didn't play in the last game [against Chelsea], but I prepare to win the game with the best squad as possible for that game. After that we think about Schalke and after that the [Carabao Cup] final and “three days later West“ Ham and three days later Bournemouth. [We take it] game by game."
Meanwhile, the Citizens are scheduled to face League Two club Newport County on the road during the weekend’s fifth round FA Cup tie and Guardiola has urged his team to avoid any complacency after the shock defeat at Wigan Athletic last campaign. Nonetheless, the Spanish tactician has confirmed that there will be a few changes with some of the regular bench players including Riyad Mahrez expected to feature during the South Wales trip. Thereafter, the Citizens have a Champions League round of 16 tie at Schalke before the much-awaited League Cup final against Chelsea.
